It depends on the kind of event and the specific requests of the client. Generally speaking, I start out DJing to get a feel for the guests and their preferences in music. It usually doesn't take long to find what makes the party jump, then I'll throw in a healthy dose of lighting and atmosphere effects. Most of the time, I use the live material on an "as needed" basis to keep thing fresh. On average, I normally will do one live then five or six as aDJ. There's no break between the two types of presentation.

I find that most people have never seen a DJ who also performs live, so it always gets a great reaction and it keeps thing fresh, with your guests always wondering "What's he gonna do next?". The main issue is to connect with the guests and keep them entertained the entire evening.
